The Woodland Crochet Men’s Hat

The Woodland Men’s Hat is sure to become a favorite when the temperature begins to fall. Its cozy coverage keeps ears warm against the chill in the fall and winter months. Its simple design in the easy to work even moss stitch pattern makes it an ideal weekend project and quick last-minute gift. Every guy will love wearing this no frills yet stylish hat!

When I released the Woodland Men’s Scarf in September 2023, I was asked if I had a matching hat. At the time I didn’t. That changes today with the addition of this beautiful crochet men’s hat!

Your favorite guy will love the way this crochet men’s hat looks and feels when the weather turns cold. It offers complete coverage with a soft yarn that offers warmth and comfort.

The Woodland crochet men’s hat is the perfect gift for Father’s Day, birthdays and Christmas. A unique handmade gift will make him feel special, knowing the crochet men’s hat he just received was made just for him!

This crochet men’s hat embraces a simple design, making it the ideal make for the crocheter on the go. Worked from the top down with a flat circle crown, the body of the crochet men’s hat employs the even moss stitch to create a lovely ridged pattern.

While the entire hat is worked in joined rounds, the even moss stitch pattern relies on turning after every round to line the stitches up properly. The result is a lovely ridged pattern that’s just the right look for this crochet men’s hat.

The entire hat is finished off with simple stitches for the perfect fit where it matters.

The crochet men’s hat comes in 3 sizes so you can choose the one that will give your guy the fit and look he’s after. With 1″ of negative ease, you’ll find the Woodland Men’s Hat has a slightly snug fit with plenty of stretch so it’s not too tight.

The crochet men’s hat can be made with any worsted weight yarn that’s soft to the touch and warm to wear. I love Lion Brand “Heartland” for those very reasons. Plus, it comes in colors every guy will love and has a beautiful sheen that looks expensive.

Heartland is just the right weight to keep the even moss stitch from being too heavy. Because the stitch pattern creates a denser fabric, choose a yarn with breathability and a little bit of stretch.

About the Even Moss Stitch

The even moss stitch creates a lovely textured finish in a dense, closed stitch without adding heft or bulk to the finished fabric.

The stitch pattern is created by alternating slip stitches with half double crochets. Because of the difference in height between these 2 stitches, the 3rd loop of the half double crochet is pushed forward, creating a ridged effect in the fabric. Turning after every round in the body of the hat aligns the stitches in a way that ensures the beautiful ridged effect.

  1. The hat has 1″ of negative ease meaning the finished circumference of the hat is 1″ less than the circumference of your head to allow for a slightly snug fit.
  2. Sizes are noted as follows: Sm (Med, Lg). St counts will be noted when there is a change. If only one st count is listed, it applies to all 3 sizes.
  3. The ch 1 at the beg of a rnd does not count as a st. Keep the turning ch loose.
  4. The even moss stitch produces a dense fabric. Be sure to meet gauge to ensure the body of the hat isn’t too small.
  5. Pay close attention to when instructed to turn and when instructed to continue without turning.
  6. To change colors, work the joining slip st in the new color before beginning the next rnd. The old color is not carried and should be cut at each color change.
  7. Repeats: All instructions included in the brackets – [ … ] – are repeated in their entirety the number of times indicated.
