A beautiful super bulky cowl for your winter wardrobe
This super bulky cowl adds bold beautiful pizzazz to any winter wardrobe. Pattern includes detailed written instructions, crochet chart.
I love a big bold statement piece and that’s what you’ll get in this super bulky cowl.
The Big Sky Cowl is a beginner friendly, quick and easy make when you need a last minute addition to your winter accessories. When you choose a gorgeous color like sky blue, it becomes a stand out neckwear piece you’ll want to wear every time the weather turns cold.
Design + Construction of the super bulky cowl
I rarely use super bulky yarn so it was fun to have a bit of a challenge. I wanted to make something that wasn’t so thick and stiff that it felt like wearing a cardboard box!
The design for the Big Sky Cowl starts as a narrow circle of just 26”. It easily fits over your head but doesn’t hang very long.
To make the cowl oversized and cozy, I basically just kept working until I was almost out of yarn. The result is a depth of a generous 14.5”.
The single crochet sections feature back loop only stitches to add a bit of visual interest and texture to an otherwise basic stitch. The double crochet mesh sections give this super bulky cowl the ability to move and drape.
Because the Big Sky Cowl is a quick make, I think it would make a fabulous last minute gift for the holidays.
About the yarn

A number of years ago I picked up a couple of skeins of Third Piece’s “Funky Chunky” at Vogue Knitting Live in New York. It sat in my stash for a very long time.
In my quest to use up some of the fabulous yarn I have stored away, I pulled out this gorgeous blue super bulky yarn and designed this super bulky cowl out of it.
One of the dangers of using what you have in your yarn stash is that the yarn may no longer be available. I want you to be able to make this super bulky cowl just like I did. However, I checked the Third Piece website and, sure enough, the only color they have is Pinot…and it’s on sale. That indicates to me that they may be discontinuing this yarn. You can find it here:
Other options are available that would substitute quite nicely for Funky Chunky. At Webs and Jimmy Beans Wool, you’ll find a bunch of choices.
Here are a few directly from some of my favorite places:
- Lion Brand “Chunky Chill”
- Lion Brand “Feels Like Butta Thick and Quick”
- KnitPicks “Alla Prima”
- King Cole “Big Value Super Chunky” from LoveCrafts
The pattern is free here on the blog. Why should I buy the PDF for this super bulky cowl?
