The Ribbed Pompom Crochet Scarf

It’s finally beginning to feel like fall around here and you know what that means!  The temps are flirting with feeling chilly at night and, at long last, the humidity has dropped.  That surely means winter is around the corner which also means we’ll be pulling out the warm crochet scarf before long.

I don’t know about you but, even though winter isn’t my favorite season of the year, I absolutely love being able to wrap up in the snuggly warmth of a thick rich crochet scarf.  I love leggings and warm sweaters, blazing fires in the fireplace, seasonal scented candles, and the nightly cup of hot tea.  Winter is the season I get to cuddle in my favorite clothing.

I absolutely love a crochet scarf that makes a big, bold statement. Better yet if it’s a mindful crochet make. In our quest for crochet as self-care, this beautiful crochet scarf ticks all the boxes.

This crochet scarf is worked lengthwise and starts by crocheting the first single crochet row in the back bump of the foundation chain.  (If you aren’t familiar with this way of working the foundation row, here’s a great tutorial by Planet June.) This technique creates a bottom edge that looks exactly like the final edge, giving the scarf a more uniform look.

Of course, if you prefer to work a foundation single crochet instead, the pattern PDF includes instructions for that technique.

The ribbing is created by working a half double crochet in the back loop only across the row. The same row is repeated to create the look of ribbing, just as you would find in a scarf that was knit.

The half double crochet ribbing means the fabric is denser with a beautiful, springy drape.  The extra length of the scarf gives you the option of double wrapping the crochet scarf for extra warmth.  And, let’s talk about those pompoms – they’re big and oh so cushy!  They finish off the look with style.

Because of the simple construction, it’s easy to customize this crochet scarf.  You can change the width or length very easily.  If you like the look but not the dimensions, no problem!

Scarves, particularly those for winter, are my favorite accessories to design.  Let’s face it…the yarn choices are endless for this time of year.  I had never tried Lion Brand’s Touch of Alpaca but had seen it featured on so many feeds on Instagram.  So, I decided to give it a try and I was not disappointed.

Touch of Alpaca is an acrylic blend with just enough alpaca in it to give the yarn a soft hand and warm touch. You get the luxurious feel of alpaca without the high cost.

I love using Lion Brand yarns!  They’re affordable, yet they look and feel like luxury yarns.  Their line of yarns offer versatility and creative colorways.

Gauge: 14 hdc BLO x 12 rows = 4″

Abbreviations – US crochet terminology

  • beg – beginning
  • BLO – back loop only
  • ch – chain
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • rep – repeat
  • sc – single crochet
  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Pattern Notes

  1. The ch-1 at the beg of each row does not count as a st.
  2. When working the foundation ch, place a removable marker at regular intervals to make counting easier.
  3. At the beg and end of construction, leave a long tail for gathering the ends in preparation for attaching the pompoms.
  4. If you prefer, you may work Row 1 as you usually do instead of in the back bump. OR, you may work a row of Fsc instead. Choose the method you like!

Here’s a great video by Planet June for working in the back loop.

Pattern Instructions

Ch 245.  (Leave a long tail for gathering the end.)

Row 1:  Sc in the back bump of 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (244 sc)

Row 2:  Ch 1, hdc in same st and in each st across, turn.

Row 3:  Ch 1, hdc BLO in same st and in each st across, turn.

Rows 4-15:  Rep Row 3 12 times.

Row 16:  Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st across.  Fasten off, leaving a long tail for gathering the end of scarf.

Finishing

Using the long tail at the end of the scarf, thread the tail through the end of the scarf like a basting thread.  Gather the end as tight as possible and fasten off.

Repeat for the opposite end of the scarf.

Pompoms – Make 2 Securely attach a pompom to each gathered end.  Weave in all ends.
