Men’s Linen Stitch Scarf Crochet Pattern

*** Crochet Pattern – Men’s Linen Stitch Pattern – read on for all the details ***

Men are difficult to crochet for, IMHO!  Pretty much all designs are aimed at women because women are the majority of crocheters and consumers of crochet objects.  I personally haven’t tried much for men.  However, last Christmas I decided I needed to make something for my husband.  We’ve been married a long time and I can count on one hand how many items I’ve made for him.  That’s probably against the marriage vows, right?!!!

The challenge

The stitch:  My husband is very traditional and rather conservative in his clothing choices so I knew I needed to pick a stitch pattern that blended in rather than stood out.  The linen stitch offers just the right texture and highlights the beautiful qualities of the yarn I chose.  Which brings me to the next challenge…

The color:  I decided the scarf should be one he could wear with his nicer black wool coat.  And, since I stated above that he’s rather conservative, a matching black seemed the logical choice.  However, I wasn’t much interested in using a matte black yarn because that would just get lost in all the coat color.  And, now we’re at the final challenge…

The yarn:  Lion Brand’s “Heartland” was the perfect choice.  Black – or in this case Black Canyon – has a subtle color variation in it that compliments the color of his black coat but doesn’t get swallowed up completely.  The yarn has a beautiful drape without looking feminine and maintains that gorgeous drape especially when worked up in linen stitch which can be a bit dense.  Best of all, it’s warm, cozy, easy to care for (it’s 100% acrylic) and a dream to work with.

What’s in a pattern?

This scarf works up fairly quickly although, because it’s all single crochet and chains, it might take a bit longer.  The stitch pattern is extremely easy to remember so this isn’t a difficult pattern to follow.  The only thing you need to keep track of is the row count.  I tried counting the rows once I started and it was pretty hard to see the individual rows.  The scarf is worked lengthwise (side to side), not end to end.  The stitch pattern combined with the yarn means this scarf has a moderate drape, just right for easily wrapping around the neck for warmth.

This pattern is binge-worthy so cue up your favorite Netflix or Hulu series and get started!

What’s included in the pattern?

In every MadameStitch pattern, you’ll get detailed information about what you need to get started, extensive Notes to help answer any questions you may have, and easy to understand pattern instructions.  Included with this pattern is a handy chart showing an example of the linen stitch.

The particulars…

Yarn:  Lion Brand’s “Heartland” worsted weight yarn – 100% acrylic (5oz/251yd; 142g/230m)
You’ll need 2 skeins of Black Canyon to match the sample.  I did find when working with the tweed version of this yarn, the scarf required 3 skeins because each skein has less yardage.

Hook:  US size I-9 (5.5mm) for the body of the scarf.  I recommend using a size H-8 (5mm) for the foundation chain.  Because the linen stitch alternates between single crochet and ch-1 spaces, the stitch tends to pull in slightly.  If you don’t use a smaller hook for the foundation chain, one edge will bow out and the scarf will curl.

Measurements:  The scarf is a generous 74″ long and 6.5″ wide.  Of course, this can easily be adjusted by changing the number of rows worked (altering the width) or changing the number of foundation chains worked (altering the length). Keep in mind that this stitch pattern requires an even number of foundation chains to work so any adjustment must take that into account.

A couple more…

This Christmas I made these scarves for my sons.  The first one is made with Heartland in the color “Mammoth Cave”.  The second one is made in “Black Canyon Tweed”.  The tweed version of Heartland has some rayon in it.  You’ll need 3 skeins because there is less yardage in each skein.  You also might need to use a larger hook because the tweed is thicker than the regular Heartland even though it’s listed as a worsted weight yarn.
