One of the best ways to take care of yourself and take some time to recharge is to pick up a good book. I love to read. I choose to read after I’ve gotten in bed for the night. But sometimes, I curl up in my favorite recliner and wrap myself in something like the granny stitch shawl.

Design + Construction

As soon as I saw the color name for Lion Brand’s “Flikka” – Library Book – I knew I had to use it. My daughter and I are avid readers so it was a perfect fit. Plus, the yarn has a cozy vibe with it’s subtle flecks of color in blues and browns, my favorite color groups.

This oversized granny stitch shawl features alternating sections of solid double crochet and granny stitch which work well together. The granny stitch is one of my favorite design elements.

I designed this granny stitch shawl to be an easy, mindful make because I absolutely love a project that I can work on while relaxing. The rows start at the top center of the shawl and work out from there. Once you get started, it’s easy to see where the stitches line up and how the sections fit together.

The Library Book Granny Stitch Shawl is a traditional triangle style construction.

What makes this granny stitch shawl so special?

  • It’s oversized so it provides ALL the cuddles!
  • The yarn and granny stitch combine to give the shawl a vintage look.
  • The pattern is beginner friendly; the shawl is a great mindful make.
  • And, it’s fabulous for cozying up next to the fire with a good book!

I chose ‘Flikka’ for this shawl for 3 reasons.

  1. The fiber content included cotton meaning the granny stitch shawl can be worn in multiple seasons.
  2. DK weight keeps the shawl lighter weight while still providing warmth.
  3. I simply couldn’t resist the color name – Library Book (the color scheme includes some of my favorites).

Unfortunately, Lion Brand has discontinued this lovely yarn. And, at this posting, the company has also discontinued its replacement, Comfy Cotton Blend. Any DK weight yarn will work with this granny stitch shawl because its generous size allows for some deviation.

To achieve the same affect as the original yarn, choose a cotton or cotton blend that has breathability, warmth, and more structure than an animal fiber yarn which is what this granny stitch shawl needs.

Here are a few of my favorites:

You’ll also need an acrylic solid color to pair with the Comfy Cotton. I used Stylecraft Special DK because I loved how the color complimented the other yarn. Because I’m in the US, I ordered mine from the Wool Warehouse in the UK. It’s also available through LoveCrafts. Even though this is also a UK company, they have US distribution. I’ve ordered other yarns from them and the service has been quick.

  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Stitch Count by Row

I highly recommend counting the number of stitches at regular intervals while you work, especially when transitioning from one section to the next.

In the chart below, the solid section rows are shaded blue, the granny stitch sections remain white.

  1. When counting the number of sts in a row, count all stitches AND chains.
  2. Be careful not to work the first st of each row too short or too tight. The edges tend to pull so be sure to pull up the first loop of the STsc or make the turning ch-3 loose.
  3. Pay close attention to the placement of the granny clusters in the 1st row of each granny section. The number of sts skipped is important.
  4. The shawl is completely reversible – there is no right or wrong side.
  5. To change colors between sections, do the following: Work to the last step of the final dc of the row. Drop the working color. With the new color, complete the final dc of the row, then turn and begin working the next row.

Solid section 1

Row 1: With MC, ch 4, dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, 2 dc in same ch, turn.

Row 2: STsc, ch 1, dc in next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp (corner made), dc in next st, ch 1, dc in last st, turn.

Row 3: STsc, ch 1, dc in ch-1 sp, dc in each st to corner sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner, dc across to and into ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in last st, turn.

Row 4-5: Rep Row 3.

To complete the body of the shawl, alternate colors as established and work the following pattern:

  • Solid section 3 (Rows 17-21): Rep Rows 9-13.
  • Granny section 3 (Rows 22-24): Rep Rows 14-16.
  • Solid section 4 (Rows 25-29): Rep Rows 9-13.
  • Granny section 4 (Rows 30-32): Rep Rows 14-16.

  • Solid section 6 (Rows 41-45): Rep Rows 9-13.
  • Granny section 6 (Rows 46-48): Rep Rows 14-16.
  • Solid section 7 (Rows 49-53): Rep Rows 9-13. Do not turn at the end of Row 53.

Do not fasten off after Row 53. Take a pause to weave in any ends you may have up to this point. If you wish to make your shawl larger, follow the established pattern of alternating solid and granny sections to the desired size.

Continue to Top Edging.

Top Edging

From the end of Row 53, work 2 more dc in the same st as the last st of Row 53 to turn the corner. Work 2 dc into (not around) the end st of each row across the top edge, being careful not to work too many sts at the center of the top edge. At the end of the top edge, work 2 more dc in the first st of Row 53 to form the 2nd corner. Join with a slip st to the 1st st of Row 53 to finish.

Fasten off and weave in all ends. Block if necessary.

Grab a good book and snuggle up in your new granny stitch shawl!
