There’s nothing like a traditional basic granny square. But sometimes you need a bit of a variation to keep things interesting.
The half and half granny square is a simple variation of the traditional granny square, making it a perfect square for a mindful crochet project. Once you learn how the stitch pattern works, you no longer have to follow a pattern.
About the square
The Half and Half Granny Square combines the look of the traditional basic granny square with the closed texture of a solid granny.
The size of this square can easily be adjusted just by increasing or decreasing the number of rounds worked. In fact, this one little square can be made big enough to become an entire blanket!
This particular half and half granny square is designed to be a part of the Friends with Granny blanket CAL so, in this free pattern, the finished size is 8” square.

Uses for the Half and Half Granny Square
The Half and Half Granny Square adapts well to a variety of projects. Use it to create geometric shapes by using separate colors for the 2 halves.
The squares can be adjusted in size to become a scarf with a fun zigzag pattern. And, it would work beautifully for a granny square blanket, either in combination with other types of granny squares or with just the half and half granny square.
I can’t wait to create both scarves and blankets from this simple little half and half granny square.
About the yarn
The sample is worked in WeCrochet “Brava Worsted”, a versatile acrylic yarn that comes in a wide array of colors and is fairly inexpensive. You can choose any worsted weight yarn you like in any color combination you choose.
This half and half granny square would adapt well to other yarn weights, particularly DK and bulky. It will retain its special qualities no matter what weight you choose.
