Granny’s Garden Path Crochet Blanket Strip

Spring is one of my favorite seasons of the year. What makes it so appealing are the emerging leaves and flowers displaying brilliant vibrant colors. There’s a sense of renewal in the air and I love being a part of it.

I am excited and honored to be a part of the Blossoming Blanket crochet along. This gorgeous project has brought me together with one of my favorite hosts – Hortense of Knitting with Chopsticks – along with other crochet designer colleagues to design in collaboration.

Blanket crochet alongs have become so popular of late. Crocheters love the community a crochet along offers, plus the finished blanket becomes a treasured part of the home.

I hope you enjoy Granny’s Garden Path crochet blanket strip, the 4th installment in the Blossoming Blanket CAL!

The theme of the Blossoming Blanket is floral/spring. For my crochet blanket strip I wanted to use commonly known crochet stitches that are accessible to crocheters of all skill levels.

One of my new favorite stitch patterns is Puffs and Grannies, a 4-row repeat stitch pattern that combines puff stitches and granny stitches for a stunningly beautiful look. I discovered this interesting stitch pattern when researching innovative ways to incorporate the granny stitch in a design.

You’ll find the original Puffs and Grannies stitch pattern in my Bianca Cowl.

For this crochet blanket strip, a modified version of the Puffs and Grannies stitch pattern sits between rows of camel stitch (more commonly known as the half double crochet worked in the 3rd loop), the combination of the 2 evoking images of a stroll down the garden path.

I think the finished look of this crochet blanket strip fits the floral/spring theme quite well.

Even though this stitch pattern looks complicated, it really is quite intuitive and easy to work. You’ll need to know the granny stitch (3 double crochets in the same space), the puff stitch and the camel stitch. These are all explained in the pattern.

Within each row, once you establish the stitches for that row, you’ll repeat them across the row. For instance, a single crochet, chain 3 and puff stitch are all worked in the same stitch, skipping 2 stitches to do it all over again. That’s actually the most complicated row in the entire crochet blanket strip.

Stitches on subsequent rows fit logically on top of the stitches of the previous row so there’s really no counting necessary. That ensures the stitch pattern works out correctly without a lot of effort.

Once you’ve worked the camel stitch and a section of the modified Puffs and Grannies, those rows are repeated. One more row of the camel stitch and your crochet blanket strip is complete!

The Puffs and Grannies Stitch Tutorial

This video will help you with Rows 3 & 4 of Granny’s Garden Path. While this video was made with the Bianca Cowl in mind, you’ll still be able to see how the stitches are made for these 2 rows.

  • Row 3 at 2:02 – Here you’ll see how to work the (sc, ch 3, puff) in the same stitch. A ch-4 is called for in the video; ignore that and work a ch-3 instead.
  • Row 4 at 4:07 for the granny stitches worked in the ch-3 spaces

  1. Ch 1 at the beg of a row does not count as a st.
  2. A ch-2 or ch-3 can be substituted for the STsc without altering the construction. Whatever you choose to substitute, be sure it creates a straight edge the height of a dc.
