Introducing the Granny Wrap, an oversized shawl wrap, made entirely of granny squares, perfect for the cooler months of the year.
The Granny Wrap is a cozy warm blanket style wrap. It’s the perfect project for granny square lovers, especially for those who want to treat themselves to a little comfy luxury on cold days. It’s generous size means you’ll be covered when you need some extra warmth.
Construction overview of the Granny Wrap
What I love most about this wrap design is that the squares are joined as you make each one, a technique known as “JAYGO”. Instead of crocheting a ton of granny squares and then being faced with sewing them all together, each square is joined to the larger piece as it’s completed.
I love to make large granny square projects. Well, any granny square project to be honest! I love the repetitiveness of the granny squares and seeing the pile of squares grow. Plus, any granny square project becomes my favorite travel buddy project!
What I don’t love is sewing them all together, then having to weave in all of the ends. The finishing part just puts a damper on the whole thing.
That’s why I chose to use join-as-you-go. Each ch-1 space and the middle chain of each corner on the joining sides of the square are replaced with slip stitches that join the working square to the adjacent square. I also wove in the ends as each square was joined to the larger work. When I was ready for the border, most of the finishing was done!
The Yarn
For this wrap, I chose Paintbox Yarns “Simply Aran”. It’s 100% acrylic, making it easy to care for and is a great choice for the cost conscious among us. This is a big project, after all, and we want it to stay within our budgets.
Each skein has 210 yds/184m. I used 8 skeins of the main color (Slate Grey) and 2 skeins of the contrasting color (Mustard Yellow).
Any worsted weight yarn will be good for this project. You could substitute a Lion Brand or KnitPicks yarn in the same weight category. Or, because it’s completely composed of granny squares, you could use this as a stash busting project. Just find enough of one color to work the border to tie the whole project together!
What’s in the pattern?
- Extensive written instructions that detail the joining portion of the pattern.
- A color grid for square placement and the order of joining the squares.
- Stitch charts for the squares, the border, and for working the slip stitch joins.

What else do I need?
You’ll need a US size H-8 (5mm) hook. If you prefer a looser granny, go up a size or two. You’ll also want to keep a tapestry needle and a pair of scissors handy for weaving in the ends as you join each square.
