Need another project that uses up your yarn stash?  The linen stitch crochet mug rug is a free pattern that’s beginner-friendly.  A perfect addition to your home, use it anywhere you need to protect your furniture.  The linen stitch is such an easy stitch pattern to work and creates a beautiful texture that’s absorbent.  Because each one takes just a bit of yarn, this free pattern is a great way to bust your yarn stash!

The crochet linen stitch is one of my all-time favorite stitch patterns!  I’m always looking for projects to use it in.  I love to add a linen stitch border to afghans I make.  The past couple of Christmases I’ve gifted the male members of my family linen stitch scarves.  It’s such an elegant choice for the men in your life.  Check out the pattern on Etsy HERE.

The linen stitch crochet mug rug free pattern works up quickly when you need a last minute housewarming gift.  Use the mug rug to protect your furniture inside the house and out on the deck.  You won’t have to buy any yarn because this makes a fabulous yarn stash buster!  And, it’s beginner-friendly!

The yarn

I’ve made two versions of the mug rug, one for dk weight and one for worsted weight.  Chances are you have plenty of one or both of those types of yarn in your yarn stash.

Stylecraft “Special DK” is a staple in my yarn stash.  I use it for baby blankets a lot because of its soft, cuddly feel.  For this project, it’s a great choice because it’s absorbent, easy care and not too thick.  Right now, it may be difficult to get your hands on some because of international shipping restrictions. I would recommend Lion Brand or KnitPicks for substitutions if you’re looking to buy some yarn.

For the worsted weight version I chose Dishie Multi by KnitPicks.  I’ve never used it before and wanted to give it a try.  I LOVE the color pooling in my mug rug!  This is also a great choice because it’s absorbent, slightly thicker, and the yarn makes a sturdier version of the mug rug.  Ordering from KnitPicks is really easy right now; you can order it HERE.  But, if you want to dig into your yarn stash, any other mercerized cotton will do the trick.

Here’s what you’ll need for the pattern…

This pattern is written for 2 versions of the mug rug, one for dk weight and one for worsted weight depending upon what you have in your yarn stash.  That will affect the number of chains you begin with.

Yarn:  Any dk or worsted weight yarn; each mug rug takes approx. 7-12g each.

Hook:. You’ll need 2 hooks for making the mug rug.  Use a US size G-6 (4mm) for working the foundation chain, switching to a US size H-8 (5mm) to work the rest of the mug rug.  Starting with a smaller hook prevents the bottom edge from being too loose and distorting the shape of your square mug rug.

Finished size and gauge:. Each square should measure approx. 4.5″ if your gauge is approx. 20 sts x 19 rows = 4″ for the dk version and 18 sts x 17 rows = 4″ for the worsted weight version.

Notes

  1. Use the smaller hook to work the foundation chain.  Switch to the larger hook to begin working in rows.  The foundation chain should be tight and firm to prevent the bottom edge from being stretched.
  2. Instructions are included for dk and worsted weight options.   While the instructions for making the mug rug will be the same, the number of foundation chains will change.

Abbreviations:  ch – chain; rep – repeat; sc – single crochet; sk – skip; sp – space.

Row 2:  Sc in first sc and in ch-1 sp, * ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from *, sc in last sc, ch 1, turn.

Row 3:  Sc in first sc, * ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * across to the end of the row, ch 1, turn.
