Inspiration + Design

Like many of you, I’ve been looking for ways to make a positive impact on the environment by replacing my disposable items with reusable items. I’ve also been looking for ways to save money. I have a lot of worsted weight cotton in my stash and wanted to find a good use for it. Crochet washcloths are an excellent solution to so many needs!

While the granny square and granny stitch are still my main squeeze, I love trying new stitches and stitch patterns and using them in my designs. The stitch patterns always need to be simple and easy to remember because most of my crochet time is meant to relax me, not stress me! Do you feel the same?

The crossed double crochet is so easy to crochet and results in a more interesting fabric than plain double crochet would. It’s sort of a hybrid between texture and lace. The resulting fabric has beautiful drape without being too thick, making it the perfect stitch pattern for garments to household items.

The construction is quite simple: The body is worked in alternating rows of crossed double crochet and single crochet. It’s finished off with a round of single crochet to create a clean, finished edge around the washcloth.

About the yarn

As I said, this washcloth is perfect for using up some of your yarn stash, especially if you have as much worsted weight cotton as I do. Mercerized cotton works best because it doesn’t stretch, it holds its shape, and it doesn’t get fuzzy with repeated washing.

I happened to have some skeins of Lion Brand’s “24/7 Cotton” in my stash. Back when I bought it, I’m sure I had something in mind to use it for. That idea was never written down so I grabbed up the 3 colors I had and got started with this pattern (which turned into an entire spa set!).

I had never tried this yarn before so I was very happy to discover that it works up so beautifully. The colors are vibrant and the stitch definition is crisp. While that isn’t as important in a washcloth, you’ll want your finished washcloth to look gorgeous, especially if it’s a gift or an addition to your home décor.

If you have a bunch of small scraps – bits and bobs – this washcloth is perfect for using them up. Let your imagination run wild with color combinations and how to apply it to the washcloth construction.

You can purchase the PDF. What’s included?

  • Crochet chart
  • Detailed written instructions
  • Ad-free, beautifully formatted PDF that you won’t have to scroll through!
