Your No. 1 indulgent crochet cowl for cozy winter warmth
Discover the perfect blend of style and warmth with the Crossroads Cowl. This crochet cowl will become your go-to fall and winter accessory, keeping you comfortable and fashionable all season long!
The Crossroads Crochet Cowl
I love to wear a crochet cowl. I often add a matching crochet cowl to a professional outfit instead of wearing a necklace. It’s the perfect handmade accessory to wear when you want to add a touch of style to any casual or professional outfit.
I also love wearing a crochet cowl when the weather turns colder, particularly in the changeable fall weather when heavy accessories are still just a bit too much.
A crochet cowl is truly a versatile accessory. Depending on the weight and fiber content of the yarn, the texture created by the stitches, and the overall size, a crochet cowl can be made for whatever season you want.
Design + Construction of the Crossroads Crochet Cowl
In the case of the Crossroads crochet cowl, I designed it to be a warm, cozy accessory for the fall and winter season. When I designed the Crossroads Ear Warmer, I knew I wanted a cowl to go with it.
In the ear warmer, I employed a stitch called the “crossed double crochet” where the first double crochet of the pair is worked in the stitch after a skipped stitch. The second double crochet of the pair is worked in the skipped stitch. The result is a visually stunning yet subtle texture.
I love to create simple, straightforward crochet designs and that’s exactly what this crochet cowl is – a beautifully textured piece that’s still quick to make and provides a mindful, relaxing project to work on.
The Crossroads crochet cowl is the perfect blend of subtle texture and added warmth for those chilly fall and winter days.
The Yarn
Because I wanted a companion piece for the Crossroads Ear Warmer, I used the same yarn for this crochet cowl.
Knit Picks “Swish Worsted” is a machine-washable yarn that is super soft. Even those with sensitive skin will love the feel of this yarn. And, because cost can be a factor, the price point is accessible even for this merino wool.
Swish Worsted has beautiful stitch definition, allowing the subtle texture of the crossed double crochets to shine. The yarn’s sophisticated look compliments the stitches in a way that creates a truly beautiful crochet cowl appropriate for any occasion.
The crochet cowl is worked in the round which means there’s no seam to sew when you’re finished. To maintain the look of the stitch pattern, you’ll turn after joining at the end of each round, working on the right and wrong sides of the crochet cowl.
An easy to remember row repeat and easy to work stitches makes this crochet cowl a satisfying, fairly quick make.
You’ll have your crochet cowl finished in no time and be the talk of the town when you step out in your very own Crossroads crochet cowl!

Special Stitches
Crossed double crochet (crossed dc): Sk st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st. In this stitch pattern, the double crochets are worked the same as usual. However, a stitch is skipped and the first double crochet of the 2 is worked in the next stitch. The second double crochet of the pair is worked in the skipped stitch, causing them to be crossed.
Foundation single crochet (Fsc): Make a slip knot and ch 2. Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook. YO, pull up loop (2 loops on hook). YO, pull through 1st loop only (ch made). YO, pull through both loops on hook (sc made). The 1st Fsc is complete.
For 2nd and all subsequent sts: Insert hook in ch made in the previous st (under both loops). YO, pull up loop (2 loops on hook). YO, pull through 1st loop only (ch made). YO, pull through both loops on hook (sc made).
Stacked single crochet (STsc) – (This stitch is used at the beginning of a row or round to replace the traditional turning ch-3. It has the appearance of a dc.) – Insert hook in same st as loop, YO, pull up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (bottom sc made), insert hook in left vertical bar of bottom sc, YO, pull up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (top sc made).

Pattern Notes
- ‘Ch 1’ at the beginning of any round does not count as a st.
- Turn after every round. Turning creates the texture.
- The 1st st of each round is worked in the last st of the previous rnd. In the sc rounds, that means the 1st sc will be worked in the same st as the ch-1.
- When working the last st of the round, be careful not to add a stitch. Sometimes it may look as though there’s an open st to work. When in doubt, count the sts to ensure a count of 120 sts is maintained throughout. And, be sure the crossed double crochet stitches are visually lined up vertically.
- All odd-numbered rounds are wrong side. All even-numbered rounds are right side. This is important because all crossed dc rounds should be on the right side of the fabric.
- STsc counts as a dc. A ‘ch 3’ turning chain may be substituted for the STsc throughout.
- The row pattern is based on an 8-round repeat.
Pattern Instructions

Rnd 2 (RS): Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st around, join with slip st to beg st, turn. (120 sc)

Rnd 4 (RS): STsc, crossed dc around to last st, dc in last st, join with slip st to beg st, turn. (2 dc, 59 crossed dc)

Rnds 6-9: Work Rnds 4-5 2 times.
Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st around, turn.
Rnd 11: Rep Rnd 10.
Rnds 12-43: Work Rnds 4-11 4 times.
Note: When completed, the cowl will have 5 sections of crossed dc with 3 rnds of sc between each crossed dc section and at the top and bottom edges of the cowl..
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Note: Because the 1st round is Fsc, a gap will still be visible at the bottom of the seam. Sew the seam closed using the tail left at the beginning of construction and weave in the tail.
