We’ve arrived, my friends.  The fifth and final pattern of this baby blanket series has finally released.  It’s the “C2C Heart Baby Blanket“, a quick and easy finale, one that will delight the recipient.

Just like the C2C Rectangle released last week, this c2c heart baby blanket is crocheted corner to corner.  The difference here is the addition of the perfect accent, a cute little heart in the lower corner.

Design + Construction

I love to use C2C (corner to corner) for baby blankets because it provides such a beautiful texture and cozy feel. Plus, it’s just fun to work corner to corner!

If you’ve never worked corner to corner, I highly recommend you give it a try. It’s a beginner friendly technique. The c2c heart baby blanket is the perfect first C2C project.

In this c2c heart baby blanket, you’ll find that you only need to create one or two extra bobbins to work through the heart section. That means you won’t have a ton of ends to weave in, making this a fairly quick, beginner friendly project.

You won’t have many ends to weave in, just where you’ve joined a new skein of yarn and where the heart begins and ends.  If you invisibly weave in your ends and are careful about how you carry the yarn for the color changes, this blanket is completely reversible.

The simple single crochet border – just 4 rows – completes the look.  It gives the blanket a nice sturdy finish and compliments the main body of the blanket so the focus can be on the heart in the corner. You can add as many or as few rounds as you like as well as play with the color combinations for your own unique blanket.

The yarn for the c2c heart baby blanket

For this blanket, I chose a worsted weight yarn which gives the blanket more weight and works up more quickly.  Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn” has just enough halo to give off a fuzzy warm vibe.  And, it’s easy to care for which means you can launder the blanket.  Just a word of caution, though…as with EVERY handmade item, you’ll need to place the blanket in a laundry bag before putting it in the washing machine, and NEVER ( I don’t care what the label says) put it in the dryer.

You can use any worsted weight yarn for this c2c heart baby blanket but be sure to choose one that’s good for babies.

Corner to Corner Crochet

This pattern uses the C2C (corner to corner) construction technique. If you are unfamiliar with this construction, here is a comprehensive tutorial from Make and Do Crew.

In C2C, each block or tile consists of a ch-3 followed by 3 dc. The ch-3 functions much like a regular turning chain except you aren’t turning; you’re simply bringing your hook up to the start of a new block. This ch-3 then becomes the space in which a new block is worked in the next row. Except for the final block of an increase row, the (ch 3, 3 dc) will be followed by a slip st that secures the block you just made to the body of the work.

Abbreviations – US crochet terminology

  • beg – beginning
  • ch-chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • rnd – round
  • sc – single crochet
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • RS – right side
  • WS – wrong side

Written Instructions for the C2C Heart Baby Blanket

Pattern Notes

  1. In the first block of each row, you will either increase or decrease. There is no neutral first block in C2C. A decrease simply indicates that you are not making your project any bigger along the decrease edge. The opposite is true for increasing. Visit the tutorial for instructions on increasing and decreasing in C2C.
  2. While the contrasting color is worked in one piece, the main color portion will require working from 2 separate skeins from Row 10 through Row 19 until the heart portion is complete.
  3. Make sure all yarn ends are on the wrong side of the blanket. Once you begin Row 10 – a RS row, you should keep all of the ends behind the piece.
  4. All odd numbered rows in the chart (WS) are read from right to left on the diagonal.
  5. All even numbered rows in the chart (RS) are read from left to right on the diagonal.

Pattern Instructions

Note: Because this c2c heart baby blanket is a square, you will increase at both ends of the row or decrease at both ends of the row.

Increase at both ends of the row through Row 39, following the chart below for the heart pattern.

Beginning with Row 40, decrease at both ends of the row until only 1 block remains. Complete the final block, do not fasten off, and proceed to the Border.

Border

Rnd 1:  Continuing with MC, ch 1, sc in same st, sc along entire edge, working a sc in each of the 3 dc and 2-3 sc around horizontal st, work 3 sc in each corner, join with slip st to beg sc.  Do not turn.

Rnds 2-4:  Ch 1, sc in same st and in every st around, working 3 sc in the middle st of each 3-sc corner, join with slip st to beg sc.  At the end of Rnd 4, fasten off and weave in all ends.

Color pattern for edging:

Rnds 1 & 2 – MC

Rnd 3 – CC

Rnd 4 – MC.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
