The Bianca crochet cowl

One of my all-time favorite accessories is a crochet cowl. It’s like the little engine that could with all the ways it can make your outfit better.

They’re fun and quick to crochet, providing you with a brand new accessory in less time than it takes to make a traditional scarf.

I throw on a crochet cowl when I need a little extra warmth around my neck. A crochet cowl can amplify any outfit I might have on. Plus, I’m always looking for an elegant way to upgrade even my casual outfits.

I designed the Bianca cowl to be lightweight while offering coverage when the weather requires it. I also wanted something in one color that had lots of interesting yet subtle texture.

While I absolutely adore granny squares and the granny stitch, I’m always on the lookout for interesting stitches and patterns that fit my design style.

I found the puffs and shells stitch pattern while doing a recent search. I knew right away I had to use it in a project.

The original stitch pattern was created by Sharon at the Stitch Foundry. We had a wonderful conversation about this gorgeous stitch pattern and she was thrilled I planned to use it in this crochet cowl design.

The fun part about this unique stitch pattern is that the 3-double-crochet shells are really granny stitches in disguise! Well, that’s pretty perfect!

I changed the name to “Puffs and Grannies” and adapted the stitch pattern to be worked in the round with a DK weight yarn.

For this crochet cowl design, I began with a couple of rounds of half double crochet to give the edge of the cowl a solid foundation at the bottom. Working in the 3rd loop also gives it a more finished edge.

The Puffs and Grannies stitch pattern is a 4-round repeat. To make sure the stitches line up properly in the stitch pattern, you’ll turn after each round instead of working with the right side always facing as is typical when working in the round.

I finished off the crochet cowl design the way it began – with the same 2 rounds of half double crochet edging.

The Bianca crochet cowl is extra wide to add a bit of thickness to offset the open work of the puffs and grannies. It also provides a little more coverage when the temperature is cool and crisp.

While traveling to Colorado last year, I visited a fabulous yarn shop called Yarned and Dangerous. They carried yarn brands I’d always wanted to try which is when I found the fabulous Berroco “Vintage DK”.

I have fallen in love with this beautiful blend of acrylic and wool. Wool is hard for me to work with and wear so I’m always looking for a blend that makes the wool softer. Plus, it’s just delightful to work with. I loved making the cowl as much as wearing it!

This beautiful DK weight blend has gorgeous drape, making this crochet cowl a stunning accessory that’s stylish AND functional. You’ll find the cowl great for adding a touch of warmth around your neck. Or, wear it to dress up any casual outfit (it’s great with a pair of jeans).

You can find Vintage DK at Jimmy Beans Wool and at WEBS Yarn Store.
